Summer Updates from Petals & Pages

Honoring Andrea Gibson, Poetry Slams & What's Up Next at your Local Bookstore

Hi friends!

We hope you’ve been having a great summer filled with fun in the sun, and of course, great books! We had a packed June of pride events at the shop and around Denver, and now we’re leaning into a slower end to the summer.

July is notoriously the slowest month for indie bookstores, so we really appreciate all the support getting us through this month!

We have a lot of great events & sales coming up before the summer’s end and we hope to see you soon! Next time you’re in the shop, let us know what your favorite read of the summer was! We’d love to talk books with you :)

What we’ve been up to

This month, we mourned the loss of Andrea Gibson, Colorado’s poet laureate and the person who inspired us to live this queer-literary life to begin with. Andrea and their partner Meg were instrumental in us choosing to live our lives as poets and we owe them everything. Although this was a huge loss for our community, Andrea lived a life of joy — with “stretch marks on their heart.” We hosted a celebration of life for Andrea at the shop on July 21st and were heartened that hundreds of people came out to pay tribute to them. You can read Dylah’s remarks from that commemoration here.

We also hosted our first monthly Lavender Poetry Slam at the store this month – complete with our new lavender microphone, which we had a great deal of fun making! For those of you that are new to slam, a poetry slam is not an open mic - but rather a high-energy competition. Ten poets compete in timed rounds for first, second, and third place. Judges are selected from the audience and raise boards with scores after each performance - think old school gymnastics at the Olympics! We had a phenomenal line-up of poets and can’t wait to do it again next month! Join us for our next slam on Monday, August 18th at 7:30pm and every third Monday of the month after that!
